SilverShield® antimicrobial thermoplastic
SilverShield® is North Sea Plastics Ltd designation for our range of thermoplastics, and foams, that contain an antimicrobial additive using Silver ion technology to prevent bacterial growth on the surface of the material. The additive used by North Sea Plastics Ltd does not make use of nanotechnology. SilverShield® materials passed cytotoxicity and skin irritation tests carried out by the Fresenius Institute. Copies of these tests are available upon request.
Independent laboratory tests have been conducted on the SilverShield® range of materials for their antimicrobial efficacy. The materials have been tested against Staphylococcus Aureus, also specifically on the MRSA variant, and E. Coli. The tests were carried out to the JIS Z 2801 standard. For all materials the results were excellent with a >99.99% reduction in the bacteria count after a 24 hour period, and as such the materials can be classified as having a bacteriostatic effect, i.e. they prevent bacterial growth on the surface of the material. The additive is homogeneously mixed throughout the material, giving the materials a long lasting bacteriostatic effect. The physical and moulding characteristics of the SilverShield® materials are not affected by the addition of the antimicrobial additive.
