NorthPlex®
Northplex® is the ideal material for the manufacture of diagnostic/check prosthetic sockets.
The material is classified as optically clear, perfect for visually checking fit, and, as established by scientific study, exhibits a total shrinkage, by volume, of less than 0.1%. Not only are you getting a visual confirmation of fit, you can be confident that rectification of the cast is accurately reflected in the moulded check socket. Northplex® is easily adjusted by use of a hot air gun, again an ideal characteristic for a check socket material.
Specifically designed to have superior moulding characteristics, Northplex® is an easy and forgiving material to form providing accurate and detailed moulds. This characteristic is not only appreciated in the prosthetics profession. It is also appreciated in the Maxillofacial Surgery profession, where Northplex® is used to manufacture protective face masks. These masks are used to keep skin grafts in position, and an easily moulded thermoplastic, providing high definition was required to replace a discontinued material. Extensive testing was carried out on a whole range of thermoplastics to find a suitable material, and once this testing had been completed, Northplex® was chosen as the best material to meet all the criteria required for such a demanding application.

- Optically clear
- Rigid
- Northplex is a very strong material. It has 80 - 90% of the impact strength of polycarbonate (used as bullet proof glass).
- Northplex is notch sensitive
- Shrinkage <0.25%*
Available in the following thickness:
2mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm.
Tolerance on thickness: ±5%
Sheet size for orthotics:
2440 x 1220mm, 2050 x 1250mm.
Square size for prosthetics:
460 x 420mm, 406 x 406mm, 343 x 343mm, 305 x 305mm.
Moulding temperature:
Orthotics 120°C / 248°F
Prosthetics 160°C / 320°F
N.B. Northplex must not cooked at temperatures above 160°C. Temperatures above this will seriously weaken the material.
Cooking time:
Cooking time: 3 minutes per mm thickness. N.B.As all ovens have slightly different heating characteristics please use our recommended timings as a guide only.
*Shrinkage by volume, as measured in a study conducted by NCTEPO at the University of Strathclyde.
